Our world is becoming ever more complex.

One of the consequences of any increase in complexity is that it leads to everything being more unpredictable. Changes now happen faster and more frequently than they used to, typically with very little warning. All of this in turn leads to uncertainty which can create anxiety and ineffectiveness. This whole pattern is being generated by our desire and ability to connect together people, information and things in new ways.

The increase in "connectedness" is exponential and it shows no sign of slowing down. It is this that has created a fundamental change in the nature of complexity, with which we all have to grapple. Now everything is connected, because of this the law of unintended consequences rules.

Today every field is deeply affected by this argument; a tipping point has been passed. Mainstream management practices, developed for a pre-tipping point world are no longer enough. What is needed are easy to use models of organisation and dialogue that help us embrace and use the very complexity which we so often avoid.

Eudemony works with, develops and helps others adopt techniques that embrace and lever the changed nature of complexity. Our role is to help our clients quickly find a way through their complexity. We do this through our consulting, facilitating and coaching services. We use a range of innovative tools and techniques; these are based on a combination of rigorous academic research and practical deployment. So that our clients can learn to use these techniques as rapidly as possible we specialise in presenting them in a way that is both engaging and easy to understand.

The principles that underpin these techniques are:-

Modelling - "To manage it you have to have a model of it"
Dialogue - "The performance of any (executive) team is directly related to the quality of their dialogue"

We believe that leaders need to behave differently for their organisations to survive. A number of common issues need to be addressed now.

Insight on what will happen next; particularly outside the organisation, must be gained. - Pre-tipping point tools and models typically rely on objective data, the future has none. Eudemony helps client teams model the relevant "big picture" by helping them balance objective data and their subjective insight. We do this using techniques such as the collaborative development and use of strategic scenarios.

Organisations have to be able to adapt faster than ever - Pre-tipping point models used the metaphor of the "well-oiled machine", the problem with machines is that they can't adapt. Post-tipping point organisations need models from the natural world. Eudemony uses a generic model of organisational design that is based on the most complex organism on the planet, the human nervous system.

Good decision making must avoid false certainty and over simplification - Our culture values certainty, it is seen as strong, however today's complexity cannot be simplified without missing something important. Individuals and teams that value and explore the "grey areas" will make better decisions. In the 21st century it is no longer acceptable just to make profits or to govern. How you govern or make profit is increasingly important. Achieving good results, delivering your purpose, while acting in a way that is consistent with your values, generates a feeling of well being.

That feeling is called Eudemony.
